The Smokehouse started as a one-month Pop Up in the Obar ,(Braunstone Gate, Leicester) 4 years ago as part of the Orange Tree Group.
After 2 years of trading, the bar was sold to fund other projects. My husband and I were amongst many who were sad to see it go especially as it was busy all the time.
They restarted the project 3 months ago under Liam’s control as a Pop-Up business which has so far sold out every event within a few hours – yes that is how quick they go!
I managed to book four of us in at the Lansdowne takeover on the 10/07/2018.
I remembered their Mac and Cheese and 14 hr Pulled Pork being amazing and I was hoping they would have that on the menu (my wish came true).
We did not know what to order and practically had everything off the menu between four of us.
Each table had a little basket with Smokehouse’s own sauces including liquid seasoning to make your meal extra smoky.
I don’t eat beef and The Meaty Platter had a couple of beef items however the staff kindly replaced it for Lamb Ribs and Ham Hock.
Between four of us we shared 2 platters and 2 small dishes. It was plenty.
We went for the Bbq’d Brixham scallop with sweet corn, garlic and parmesan (thinking about this starter is making my taste buds tingle). I have never tried barbecued scallops..these were perfectly cooked, had a great texture and melted in my mouth.
We followed with the platter below which had an 8 hour Smoked St Louis King Rib, Tandoori Smoked Lamb Rib, 14 hour smoked pulled pork, Turkey Breast in smoked butter, 12 hour smoked brisket, smoked beef shin in ale, pickled carrots, dried pickles, beetroot, apple and fennel slaw.
In addition to this, the platters come with mash potato (which we pimped up) and mac and cheese too.
The food was just all so tasty. It didn’t look a lot when it was delivered, but we were defeated. The dishes were all fresh tasting and full of smoky yet different flavours.
I have tried a few smoke houses around Leicester and still prefer this one. As for the Mac & Cheese- who doesn’t love that perfectly cooked creamy cheesy dish?
A platter feeds two people (probably three to be comfortably full).
On the evening they had a collaboration with Cut Rum and offered some fantastic cocktails.
It was a school night and my friend and I shared the Cut Rum Cooler… it was so good we could have had another one. The honey worked well with the Spiced Rum, Bison Grass Vodka & Cointreau.
The Smoked Rum Old fashioned went down well but it was too strong for me.
It’s not all about meat at the Smokehouse. They cater for Vegetarians too and also have a Platter which sounded delicious and well put together. I have recently seen many smoked vegetable recipes that look tempting so I can only imagine this tasting as good.
