Last October (2018) I went along to the launch night of Summer House Bar and Grill. The new owners have given the family pub house a good refurb and have made it into great venue for food and drink, suitable for all ages. I couldn’t wait to go back and have a meal after trying a couple of canapés that day.
You can’t miss Summer House. Located in Hall Green, Birmingham, the building is painted with pink and grey and is inviting.
Summer House has three different rooms: The main entrance leads you the bar that shows football and has a pool table. Walk through the bar and you get to two separate rooms where you can enjoy your meals. The atmosphere is totally different to the bar area.
In the back garden they have a summer house (perfect for functions) as well as a little play area to keep the kids happy.
Service:
We visited on a Sunday afternoon and there were only two staff in the restaurant area. The trade level was busy and the service was slow. The manager did apologise and said it was unusually busy for an afternoon. The staff were friendly and provided an upbeat service.
Drinks:
From cocktails to a good pint of beer or ale, Summer House has it all. On my last visit my sister and I enjoyed some Mojito’s which were delicious. They did take ages to make them however the wait was worth it.
Cocktails are 2 for 1 from 5pm – 7pm everyday.
Food:
Mixed Grill: A mixed grill is a popular option for many and Summer House have 4 types to choose from, including a Veggie Grill.
We opted for the Large Mixed Grill. This consisted of chicken wings, chicken tikka, lamb kebabs, 2 prawns and 2 lamb chops. The sound and smell of Sizzlers is enough to get anyone’s taste buds going.
The meat was charred well with some good flavours in there. The only downside was the lamb chops, which seemed rather large and had a lot of fat on them.
The prawns were juicy and the wings were crispy on the outside…just the way they should be. The meat was not dry and cooked well. Priced at £15.95 this was good value for money and enough for 3-4 people to share.
Lamb Chops: We are lamb chop lovers in the family and ordered an additional plate of lamb chops. You get four in a plate. Like the ones in the Mixed Grill, the taste was good but they were really large (a bit like mutton chops) and quite fatty.
Tandoori King Prawns: Four big prawns came on a sizzling plate. They were full of flavour and cooked in a clay oven. The spices were perfect on this dish and prawns were succulent.
Saag Paneer: This was the spiciest dish of the afternoon and it was amazing. Having good cooks in the family, I find it hard to get a tasty curry in a restaurant. The Saag Paneer had the perfect combinations of flavours and went really well with the fresh naan.
Naan: We tried the garlic & coriander, garlic & chilli & cheese naan. All were so delicious and cooked well. Naan made in the clay oven just has a different texture and melts in your mouth when its fresh and hot.
Masala Chips: The chips were the correct consistency and had a nice coating on them that had a good spice to them.
Chilli Mogo: Deep fried Cassava in a hot sauce is a favourite of mine. Cooked perfectly and marinated well, the dish was enjoyable. The dish has 3 chillies next to it on the menu however I would say it was the same spice level as the Masala Chips which had 2 chillies.
We were 6 adults and this was more than enough food for us. The portion sizes were ideal and the food tasted fresh. We were totally satisfied after the meal and look forward to returning to Summer House Bar and Grill soon. They have special themed food nights (Indian Thaali & Saag & Makki Di Roti) during the week which are worth visiting too.
Are you a fan of Sizzlers?

Anywhere that has an outdoor play area for children in the summer is a winner with me! It’s keeps them entertained and we can enjoy what looks like delicious food 🙂

Shame the service was a bit slow, however, I am glad your meal was good. The restaurant looks visually appealing and the play area would be a winner for me with the kids

The food looks great, I will keep this in mind if we ever visit Birmingham. As both my kids love Indian food and the fact it has a play area as well isn’t perfect for us.

You’ve described some seriously tasty dishes there. Pity the lamb chops weren’t great but the rest of the food sounds yummy!

Looks like a lovely restaurant. I like they have a playground so the kids have somewhere to go.

It’s a shame about the lamb chops but it sounds like the rest was very tasty.
