Fifteen Seventy Three opened in August 2009. It is an independent grill restaurant owned by a small group, the Koban Group.
A bit of history:
The Bar & Grill is located in the original Free Grammar School, in Highcross Shopping Centre, Leicester. The Grade II* listed building was a church in the very early days but in 1573 a decision was made to dismantle it and use the stone and timber to build a new school. The school closed in 1841 and news has it that it is the oldest school buildings in England. This is just one of the reasons to visit the Bar & Grill.
High ceilings with beams running across gives 1573 great character. The twinkly lights around the restaurant adds to the warm welcoming atmosphere and makes it a perfect venue for a meal.
Prince Harry dined at the venue when he paid a visit to Leicester. If it’s good enough for him I think it’s perfect for the rest of us.
The restaurant specialises in steaks and gets the meat from Owen Taylor, a well-known local brand. In addition to their steaks, they also serve fish, ribs, chicken and vegetarian dishes.
At lunch time you can enjoy some of their delicious dishes for a set price and on Sundays they serve us an amazing roast.
We were a table of 6 and opted to share a selection of starters. Each dish was plated with care, garnished and put together perfectly (not forgetting delicious).
- Chicken Liver Parfait served with Brioche & Chutney
- Deep fried seasoned calamari with a Lemon Mayo
- Barbecued Half Rack of Baby Pork Ribs
- Trio of Grilled Halloumi and Tomato Salsa served on crunchy Pesto Bread
- Mixed Mushrooms sautéed in a light Stilton Cheese Cream sauce
- Golden Beetroot, Goats Cheese and Rocket Salad, Orange and Elderflower Dressing
I enjoyed them all but if I had to pick a favourite it would be the last two.
When it came to ordering the mains I went for the Grilled and Oven cooked Sea Bass with Savoy Cabbage, Potato Croquette and Capers and Lemon Butter dressing. The seabass was delicate and the flavours in the dish were delicious. The portion was a good size too.
Kev went for medium rare Prime Beef Fillet Steak. He was pleased at the tenderness of the steak and enjoyed it with garlic butter. It was cooked medium rare, just how he likes it. Dishes from the grill come with fries, a roasted mushroom and Parmesan topped tomato.
We got to try the Vegan cauliflower steak and I was impressed by the texture and flavour of it. A portion of perfectly cooked and seasoned onion rings were delivered too.
The restaurant offers a good selection of cold and hot desserts. Kev & I went for the hot ones.
The Treacle sponge pudding with served some toffee sauce and delicious custard. A sweet combination of soft sponge and warm custard always goes down well for me.
The warm chocolate brownie that was served with amaretto ice cream. A lovely combination and a comforting dessert.
Both plates were clean which goes to show how much they were enjoyed.
1573 Bar & Grill offer a good wine and cocktail menu so there is always plenty to choose from. On the evening we went with a Argentinian Red which went perfectly with our meal.
