I am not sure why it has taken me so long to visit this beautiful stately country house considering it is just 40 minutes drive from where I live. Sometimes the best things are at your doorstep right?
Kev had booked a night here via secret escapes for my birthday. He was unsure because the reviews were mixed however, I can confirm our stay was enjoyable.
Our room & a bit of the hotel
While walking around the hotel, all the rooms off the main hallway had their own decor which made them unique. There were some amazing paintings, antique pieces as well as some of the original signage. The centre piece, and the famous photography spot was their grand staircase.
We arrived at the hotel around 4 pm and checked into our room, Campion Bell. Each room is individually designed at Stapleford Park. The paintings on the wall and the interior décor were beautiful.
Our room overlooked the field and in the morning we woke up to the sound of farm animals which was nice.
We had all the amenities we expected and more. Most importantly the room felt homely and we had a great nights sleep.
Facilities & Service
The big selling point for me was that not only is it a spa hotel, it also has a range of country pursuits and activities. There is something for everyone.
We did not book any spa treatments however had a couple of slots booked at the pool which was a good size. The pool room has a glass roof and it felt like we were on holiday. The sauna and steam room were a great way to wind down and both were well maintained.
The Country House is located in beautiful grounds over 500 acres. A place for those who want to explore the nearby area, play golf or just enjoy a massage and some pool time.
During our stay we went on a bike ride too which is complimentary ( as long as bikes are available). There are several other games that are available to guests.
The staff were all friendly during our stay and made us feel like valued customers. The hotel was well maintained too with precautions taken for Covid.
Overall the meals were enjoyable. For dinner we started with warm complimentary bread with parsley butter.
For starters we had the dressed crab and rabbit. Both dishes were plated well and full of flavour. The crab was light and refreshing. The rabbit was served in a mini wellington and in a ball both of which were scrumptious and went well with the carrot puree.
We both went for the lamb for mains and this was divine. Perfectly cooked with courgette ribbons and a good gravy, this did not look like a big portion but it was. We enjoyed it with some truffle mash. The lamb was tender and the gravy full of flavour.
For dessert I had roasted peaches with ice cream and honeycomb. There were 4 thin slices of roasted peaches with some icecream that has no flavour. This was disappointing.
Kev had the mint chocolate tart and that was amazing and definitely a good slab of chocolate to tuck into.
Breakfast was average. We felt the eggs could have been cooked better and presentation could have been better.
We enjoyed our stay and it was a nice way to spend my big day. The hotel gave me a bottle of complimentary champagne too to help the celebrations.
Though the food was not up to the standard I was hoping, the hospitality sector is still struggling and this may just be a little hiccup. I hope to return soon for their afternoon tea because the surroundings of the Country House are amazing and staff create a great atmosphere.
