Have you heard of green margarita? How about green juice margarita? I saw this on Eva Longoria’s Instagram page. She made delicious green juice mix and shook it with core margarita ingredients.
This version is similar to what she made. The idea is, if you are having a margarita why not make it with fresh vegetables and herbs for flavour rather than all the other sugars.
Why is this cocktail called Green Margarita
The margarita is made with an addition of a fresh herby and fruity green vegetable juice. The green colour comes from the coriander and mint. This margarita is a fab way to add in greens to your cocktail. I went with kiwi, coriander (cilantro), jalapenos, mint and lime juice for my green juice. Other additions can be pineapple, cucumber and avocado.
The margarita is naturally sweetened with the fruit juices and some agave and has herby tones too. There is a spice element to it too with the fresh jalapenos. I love my margaritas spicy and added a Tajin rim to my glasses. To get the chilli mix to stick to the rim of your glass either dip in some agave syrup followed by the mix to rub some lime juice then dip it in the chilli mix. The first option will give you a sweet chilli taste and it works really well.
Tajin is chilli and lime is a classic one in traditional Mexican cuisine. You can but it from amazon or tkmaxx occasionally sell it. You can adjust the jalapenos in your cocktail too depending on whether you want a spicy margarita or not. Here is the link of some of the ingredients, including the Tajin I have used to make this Spicy Margarita (aff link).
To make the margarita, blend the herbs and fruit together to for a juice. Then add it to a cocktail shaker with the rest of your ingredients for the margarita, Tequila or Mezcal, Cointreau and Lime Juice. You can add the rest of the ingredients to the blender too but I prefer shaking it with some ice. For a frozen green juice margarita, you can blend it all together with some ice.
What can I use instead of Tequila
Not everyone likes Tequila and I never used to like Margaritas until a visit to Mexico where I discovered different varieties. I prefer a Mezcal and use that for my margaritas. The one I use is slightly smoky and not too harsh.
The Cointreau adds a lovely orange taste to the cocktail and works well with the green juice.
You can use Gin in this recipe too if you do not have any Tequila. If you want a mocktail version that works great too. Skip the Tequila and Cointreau.
