It is pistachio everything season and this pistachio affogato is one you need to try. Not only does it look pretty it tastes amazing especially for pistachio fans. It sure is one of my favourite Italian desserts and easiest summer dessert.
What is Affogato
An Affogato is a dessert. A good affogato includes vanilla gelato served with a hot shot of fine espresso. The fine gelato and coffee is not always available and you can use vanilla ice cream and a shot of instant coffee. I have added pistachio crème and chopped pistachios to mine. Some people add a bit of liquor on it too like Frangelico or Amaretto. This is my version of an affogato recipe.
You may find some places call this an Affogato coffee and it is often found in the coffee menu at Italian restaurants. I like to spoon mine to start with then as it all melts together sip it with a straw.



What is pistachio crème?
It is a creamy velvety Italian paste made from pistachio paste, milk and sugar. The spread is great for baking, adding to fruit bowls, making desserts and for serving up some lovely affogato like this one. You can make pistachio crème at home
After the viral pistachio chocolate trend, pistachio crème seems to be in high demand everywhere. I used to get it from amazon but recently a friend saw some in Costco and it was much cheaper.
How to serve the Pistachio Affogato
You can make a pattern with the pistachio crème or just spread it around your cup/mug depending on what style you are using.
I spread a cross shape with the crème in the inside of my clear cup with a spoon and you can see the effect it had. I rimmed the glasses too with some crème and then added chopped pistachio on the rim.
The tricky part is getting the ice cream in half your cup quickly so it doesn’t melt and still having that aesthetic stripy look. To make it easier just add in a couple of scoops of ice cream to your cup and pour on your coffee. Taste will still be as good.
Pistachio Affogato
Ingredients
- 2 scoops of Vanilla ice-cream or Gelato
- 1-2 tsp pistachio crème
- 1 shot of coffee
- 5-8 Chopped pistachios
Instructions
- Start by roughly chopping your pistachios
- Using a small spoon design the inside of your cup with the pistachio creme and put a thin layer on the rim. You do not need a thick layer because a little goes a long way. It depends on how sweet you like it
- Dip the rim in the chopped pistachios
- To half your cup, spoon the vanilla ice cream. A spatula worked well for this
- Pour your shot of coffee in the other half
- Mix and enjoy
